Monsieur Seb @ Piknic Électronik, Aug. 16th 2009, a.k.a. Cosmix 3.5

It was hot as hell that Sunday and I was afraid my laptop might overheat from the requirements of running Torq AND recording the set, so I forgot about the idea of recording it live on the spot.

So, I re-recorded the set today in the cool of my basement studio, and here it is for your listening enjoyment.

It is kinda live because I recorded it in one take… 😉

You can stream or download the mix and and your donations are welcome to help me pay for the file hosting!

Monsieur Seb’s Daily Music Suggestion: a Picnik in the Park

zoom

Yup, the time has come!

Sunday is the day I spin two cool hours of Cosmic Disco at Picnik Electronik, from 14h to 16h!

Trust me, this set is SO going to fit with the weather and the venue! 😉

BUT REMEMBER!

Sunday’s edition is at JARDIN DES FLORALIES, not at the Calder stabile, as usual!

ATTENTION!

The reason Sunday’s edition is at Jardin des Floralies is because of the Fête des enfants, so it’s likely the parking spaces will be sparse unless you get there really early.

I strongly suggest parking near a metro station and using the tube to get to Parc Jean-Drapeau and then the shuttle to make it to the Jardin.

See you there!

Monsieur Seb’s Daily Music Suggestion: Stix’em Up!

First, thanks to my friend Steve for making me discover this.

“This” being all at once this version of Bring the Noise and the label it’s been released on.

This version of Public Enemy’s Bring the Noise is reinterpreted/remixed/mashed up by Mato.

The flipside of that release, the Beastie Boys’ Intergalactic ground through the same grinder, is just as good!

The label it’s been released on is French label Stix, seemingly quite elusive with barely any information on Discogs and apparently no website.

Plus they release everything they output on 7″ vinyl!

Monsieur Seb’s Daily Music Suggestion: Lips Smacking!

Flips

Pitchfork today offers a stream of a new Flaming Lips track from their upcoming album, as well as the actual cover art (which you see here —>).

You might not know I have a huge sweet spot for Wayne Coyne et al.‘s body of work, but that’s besides the point.

What matters here is that judging by the sound of this one, Embryonic (as it will be titled) won’t disappoint.

Not I, that is for sure!

They have yet to do so, in fact, and that’s no small feat, considering how long they’ve been at it.

I truly believe the Lips are one, if not THE most interesting bands in rock of the past 25 years.

And please, restrain yourself from replying “What about Radiohead?”

It’s pointless.

A moot argument, if ever there was one.

Monsieur Seb’s Daily Music Suggestion: an Absolute Delight

Damian-Lazarus-Smoke-The-Monster-Out_header_image_review

Although it came out in late May, I’ve only just discovered Damian Lazarus’ album Smoke the Monster Out yesterday.

I confess I did so mainly because I wanted to know a bit more about the man who was opening for Underworld, Wednesday night, beyond the fact he runs the excellent label Crosstown Rebels.

The whole album is absolutely delightful, and I strongly recommend it, but after one listen, I immediately singled out one track that won me over instantly.

I won’t say exactly why, but check out the track he cites at the -1:22 marker on the player’s timer!

Monsieur Seb’s Daily Music Suggestion: a Thing of Beauty

7thdream

Nostalgia?

I don’t think so. I’m not that type.

For some reason not worth explaining here, I felt like listening to some Love & Rockets this morning.

To my surprise, the only album I have in my iTunes library is Seventh Dream of a Teenage Heaven, their first album from 1985.

I do have their whole discography on CD, just not in iTunes. Note to self: rip L&R albums soon.

Now, 7th Dream is a great album, although it is not my favourite (Earth, Sun, Moon is), but it does contain their most beautiful song and a beauty in and all of itself, regardless of musical genre.

I’d more or less forgotten about it since I hadn’t heard it in a long while, so I was literally blown over all over again when it came on, so I just had to share it with y’all! 🙂

Monsieur Seb’s Daily Suggestion: 4 bits of Mathématique

c35ca6c7eef6e1ad6315ccb67c913f9021f8878b_normal

I’ve told you about Standing Waltz in a Daily suggestion in April.

As you may or may not know, the band’s drummer, the very excellent Pascale Mercier, also has a side project named Mathématique, which she describes as

“an electro/8bits project from Quebec City, born in december 2008, started by a girl who loves video games and vintage synths.”

I don’t think you need more words.

Monsieur Seb’s Daily Music Suggestion: Die Mensch-Maschine

kwerk

Mute has announced a major reissue programme for our beloved Kraftwerk to be released in early October, as reported here by FACT Magazine.

This reissue will coincide with the 35th anniversary of their Autobahn album.

The reissue, however, will not include the band’s first three albums — Kraftwerk 1 (1970), Kraftwerk 2 (1972), Ralf und Florian (1973) —, focusing on the better known part of their catalog, from Autobahn (1974) to Tour de France (2003), and including The Mix (1993).

Leaving out the first albums and including The Mix is a decision I find questionnable, but hey, I don’t work for Mute, do I?

As for Tour de France, it’s so recent, does it really need a remastered version?

In any case, I don’t want to sound like a party-pooper, I’m really happy about this news!

Entitled 12345678, the reissue will be available in these various formats:

  • 8 individual CDs presented in special slipcases featuring newly expanded artwork, including many previously unseen images all of which have been reproduced to the highest technical standards.
  • CD Box Set containing 8 CDs in ‘mini-vinyl’ card wallet packaging, plus individual large format booklets.
  • 8 individual heavyweight vinyl LPs with large format booklets.
  • Digital downloads

As a mini-grieving for the non-inclusion of their first albums in the reissue, I propose you listen or discover this track:
